Celebrating the Adelaide Fringe Festival: An Expert's Perspective

The Adelaide Fringe Festival is the largest art festival in the Southern Hemisphere, and it's easy to understand why. For six weeks of summer, the festival brings a unique and vibrant atmosphere to Adelaide and the South Australian metropolitan area. From cabaret to theater, comedy to circus, music to visual arts, and workshops to more, there's something for everyone at the Adelaide Fringe Festival. The festival began in 1960 when a small group of independent artists presented shows “on the sidelines” of the Adelaide International Arts Festival.

This brave group created an open access festival without curators, and it has since grown into a major event with the support of the Government of South Australia. The opening of the Adelaide Arts Festival was held from 12 to 26 March 1960 and was led by Bishop with the help of Ian Hunter, artistic director of the Edinburgh Festival. In 1998, the Adelaide Festival Corporation was established as a statutory company by the Adelaide Festival Corporation Act 1998 (AFC Act), which was under the Ministry of Arts. The four-day global music event, WomaDelaide, and the literary festival, the Adelaide Writers' Week, are part of this major event. The Adelaide Economic Development Agency and the City of Adelaide are proud to support Adelaide Fringe. The Kaurnas are recognized as the traditional owners of the country where the city of Adelaide is located today, and tribute is paid to their elders of both past and present.
